Die Cut EMI Gasket Materials for Avionics and Defense Electronics

die cut emi gaskets | die cut email gasket materials

Die cut EMI gasket materials for avionics and defense electronics use EMI silicones and EMI fluorosilicones from SSP.

Die cut gaskets that are made of EMI/RFI silicones combine strong environmental resistance with proven levels of shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency (RFI) interference. As a gasket fabrication process, die cutting combines the advantages of speed and consistency with lower production costs and less material waste.

Applications for Die Cut EMI Gasket Materials

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) supplies EMI/RFI silicones and fluorosilicones for die cut gaskets as compression molded sheets and continuous rolls. These EMI/RFI gaskets are used in a variety of industries and applications, but examples include military, aerospace, and communications applications such as:

  • avionics equipment
  • handheld communications devices
  • power supplies for unmanned vehicles and systems
  • MIL-DTL-83528 connectors
  • LCDs and military touchscreens
  • GPS, guided missiles, and weapons systems

The following section provide more information.

Avionics Equipment

Die cut EMI/RFI gaskets are used widely in avionics because electromagnetic disturbances can cause aircraft equipment to degrade or malfunction. Although EMI/RFI shielding can be deployed at the PCB level, many electronic devices and systems for aviation now use shielded enclosures with die cut gaskets.

Handheld Communications Devices

Tactical multiband radios and other types of portable and handheld communications devices can be ruggedized to withstand demanding environmental conditions. Die gaskets that are made of EMI/RFI silicones provide proven levels of shielding and resist water, weather, and a range of temperatures.

Power Supplies for Unmanned Vehicles and Systems

The power supplies for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), electrical vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, and other types of unmanned systems have internal switching circuits that generate harmonic-rich emissions. Die cut EMI/RFI  gaskets help to contain these emissions and protect circuits from crosstalk.

MIL-DTL-83528 Connectors

EMI/RFI silicones for MIL-DTL-83528 connectors need to meet shielding levels defined in a U.S. military specification for electrically-conductive gasketing materials. SSP makes shielding silicones for the lettered sections in MIL-DTL-83528 and offers several QPL-listed materials for connector gaskets.

LCDs and Military Touchscreens

The liquid crystal display (LCD) panels that are used in military touchscreens and notebook computers are susceptible to EMI from high-speed signals. Shielding silicones can be die cut into gaskets of different sizes that are nested on sheets to maximize material yields.

GPS, Guided Missiles, and Weapons Systems

Global positioning systems (GPS), guided missiles, and weapons systems also need die cut gaskets that provide environmental sealing and EMI/RFI shielding. SSP’s products include shielding silicones with low levels of outgassing that meet ASTM E595 requirements.
