EMI Shielding Elastomers: Solutions for Every Scenario

emi shielding elastomers

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) has the best and broadest range of EMI shielding elastomers on the market. Our Made in USA materials meet tough specifications like MIL-DTL-83528, and we also offer nickel-coated graphite products that cost less than silver-filled elastomers. Plus, SSP provides the largest line of non-standard EMI shielding materials for every scenario.

MIL-DTL-83528 QPL Certified Materials

SSP makes MIL-DTL-83528 Type A, B, C, D, and K silicones that are part of the Qualified Product List (QPL) from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which is part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). Each of our EMI shielding elastomers can replace Parker Chomerics CHO-SEAL® materials and is available with a full certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch.

  • SSP2569-65 is an M83528 QPL Type A silicone and an offset to CHO-SEAL 1215.
  • SSP2368-65 is an M83528 QPL Type B silicone and an offset to CHO-SEAL 1285.
  • SSP2573-75 is an M83528 QPL Type C fluorosilicone and an offset to CHO-SEAL 1217.
  • SSP2486-70 is an M83528 QPL Type D silicone and an offset to CHO-SEAL 1287 and 1298.
  • SSP2571-85 is an M83528 QPL Type K silicone and an offset to CHO-SEAL 1212.

These SSP materials contain silver-coated particles. The last two digits indicate the durometer, or hardness, on the Shore A scale.

Nickel-Coated Graphite Products

When the original MIL-DTL-83528 specification was published, silver-filled EMI silicones were the standard because the price of silver was low and almost all of the applications for EMI gaskets were military-based. Today, the price of silver is much higher – and some silver-filled M83528 materials have had problems with galvanic corrosion.

Silicones that are filled with nickel-coated graphite particles aren’t as electrically conductive, but they cost less than silver-filled elastomers and provide the shielding effectiveness that many applications require. In fact, nickel-graphite silicones are now used in major military applications around the world. Two materials are especially worth noting.

  • SSP502-65 is a 65-durometer nickel-graphite silicone.
  • SSP502F-60 is a 60-durometer nickel-graphite fluorosilicone.

Both have been tested to MIL-DTL-83528 and have a shielding effectiveness of > 113 dB in the 20MHz to 10GHz range.  SSP502-65 also has an independent shielding effectiveness report and is an offset to CHO-SEAL 6305.

Non-Standard Products for EMI Shielding Challenges

SSP also makes four types of non-standard products that address tough EMI shielding challenges.

  • Soft EMI gasket materials
  • Low outgassing shielding silicones
  • Reinforced EMI elastomers
  • Flame-retardant EMI silicones

Soft EMI Elastomers

SSP makes soft EMI elastomers that provide superior sealing under low closure force. They have low durometers on the Shore A scale and do not require high compression to form a tight, reliable seal.

  • SSP502-30 is a 30-durometer nickel-graphite silicone.
  • SSP502-40 is a 40-durometer nickel-graphite silicone.
  • SSP550-45 is a 45-durometer silver-aluminum fluorosilicone.

Low Outgassing Shielding Silicones

SSP’s also makes EMI shielding silicones that meet ASTM E595 requirements for low outgassing, a problem that can cloud cameras, sensors, and electronics in the vacuum environment of space.

  • SSP502-40-V0 is a low outgassing 40-durometer nickel-graphite silicone that also has a UL 94 V0 flame rating.
  • SSP502-60-V0 is a low outgassing 60-durometer nickel-graphite silicone that also has a UL 94 V0 flame rating.
  • SSP502-55LT is a low outgassing 55-duromter nickel-graphite silicone for extreme low temperature environments.

Reinforced EMI Elastomers

SSP’s reinforced EMI elastomers provide greater structural integrity for thin-walled gaskets. They’re also a great low-volume replacement for form-in-place (FIP) EMI gaskets.

Both products are reinforced with an inner layer of conductive fabric and are available in four different inch-based thicknesses: .024, .032., .040, and .062.

Flame Retardant EMI Silicones

SSP flame retardant EMI silicones have UL 94V0 flame ratings and are used in data centers, routers, and WiFi boosters. They also provide offsets to discontinued EMI gasket materials from W.L. Gore.

  • SSP502-40-V0 is a 40-durometer nickel-graphite silicone with a UL94 V0 flame rating that can be used instead of GORE GS2100.
  • SSP502-60-V0 is a 60-durometer nickel-graphite silicone with a UL 94 V0 flame rating that can be used instead of GORE GS5200.
