low durometer silicones

Low Shore A/Soft
EMI/RFI Shielding Silicones

Soft conductive elastomers allow for lower closure force and better sealing capabilities.

Choose sheets, rolls, moldable compounds, extrusions, EMI O-rings, or EMI gaskets.

Low Shore A/Soft EMI Silicones

SSP’s low shore A/soft EMI silicones provide reliable sealing under low closure force and are available in a durometers down to 30 Shore A. Choose nickel-graphite-filled silicones (including a flame-retardant offset to GORE GS2100) or a 45-durometer silver-aluminum fluorosilicone that offers a softer version of CHO-SEAL 1287 and 1298. This soft EMI fluorosilicone is also tested to ASTM E595 and is fuel and solvent resistant.

FAQ: Low‑Shore (Soft A) EMI/RFI Shielding Materials

What are low‑Shore A EMI/RFI shielding materials?

Low‑Shore A EMI materials are conductive elastomers formulated with very soft durometers—typically Shore A 20–40—to provide excellent conformability, low closure force, and reliable EMI/RFI shielding in delicate or uneven sealing surfaces.

Why choose a soft‑durometer EMI gasket?

Soft EMI materials compress easily, making them ideal for lightweight enclosures, thin‑wall housings, plastic assemblies, and applications where excessive compression force could damage components or distort mating surfaces.

Do soft EMI materials still provide strong shielding performance?

Yes. SSP’s low‑Shore A conductive elastomers maintain stable conductivity and shielding effectiveness across a wide frequency range, even at lower durometers. They are engineered to balance softness with electrical performance.

What applications benefit most from low‑Shore A EMI materials?

These materials are commonly used in handheld electronics, medical devices, lightweight aerospace components, plastic enclosures, and any application requiring low closure force or improved surface conformity.

Are low‑Shore A EMI materials available in silicone and fluorosilicone?

Absolutely. SSP offers soft‑durometer EMI materials in both silicone and fluorosilicone. Fluorosilicone versions add resistance to fuels, oils, and solvents while maintaining softness and shielding performance.

Do soft EMI materials have higher compression set?

Soft materials can exhibit higher compression set than harder durometers, but SSP’s formulations are engineered to maintain elasticity and long‑term sealing performance even at low Shore A values.

What filler systems are available in low‑Shore A EMI materials?

SSP offers soft EMI materials with nickel‑graphite, silver‑aluminum, silver‑nickel, and other conductive fillers. Each filler system provides different conductivity, corrosion‑resistance, and galvanic compatibility characteristics.

Can SSP customize low‑Shore A EMI materials?

Yes. SSP can tailor durometer, filler loading, thickness, color, and cure characteristics to meet specific electrical, mechanical, and sealing requirements.
