Rubber & Plastics News, a leading publication for the rubber and plastics industry, recently featured Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) in an article called SSP looks to partnerships, technology to chart growth path. As author Mike Scott explains, SSP is an innovative manufacturer of silicone materials that’s expanding its global reach through international partnerships. Over the last decade, SSP’s revenues and employees have more than doubled. Currently, SSP is planning a 30,000 sq. ft. manufacturing expansion at its 52,000 sq. ft. headquarters in Ballston Spa, New York (USA).
As Rubber & Plastics News reports, many factors are driving SSP’s growth. For example, as a supplier of EMI/RFI shielding elastomers and military-grade silicones, SSP is developing compounds that meet very specific and demanding requirements in the defense industry. Examples include conductive silicones that meet Qualified Product List (QPL) requirements from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). By working with international partners like Queensland Gasket, SSP is also able to penetrate specific geographic markets in the global defense industry.
In addition to meeting the needs of military buyers, SSP serves the aerospace industry. The article in Rubber & Plastic News doesn’t mention this, but SSP just revamped the Mil / Aero silicones section of its website so that engineering and procurement personnel can more easily find its AA 59588 silicones, which include Class 1A and 1B, Class 2A and 2B, and Class 3A and 3B materials. SSP also provides AMS silicones and MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosiliciones for military and aerospace applications. An even newer section of the website, Custom Molded Gaskets, highlights additional offerings. EMI Extrusions are another new listing.
As Mike Scott’s excellent article explains, SSP’s conductive silicones are also meeting demand in the automotive and telecommunications industries for more robust shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI). Global positioning systems (GPS), advanced sensors, and 5G technology are raising the bar in several ways. EMI/RFI gaskets for these applications need to resist extreme temperatures and weather conditions. SSP’s silicones provide this environmental resistance and, because they’re filled with metal or metal-coated particles, deliver electrical conductivity.    Â
In addition to EMI/RFI shielding and silicone elastomers, SSP’s innovative materials include silicone lubricating compounds, thin silicone membranes, and laboratory products that are used in more than 20 countries. There’s also significant revenue in meeting the needs of the laboratory consumables market and supplying analytical testing products. SSP’s FDA/USP Class VI silicones underscores the company’s commitment to the medical device industry.
