SSP’s MIL-DTL-461 fluorosilicone meets tough EMI shielding requirements and combines fuel and solvent resistance with low outgassing.

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) is announcing that SSP-2551, a nickel-aluminum fluorosilicone that combines EMI shielding with fuel, solvent, and galvanic corrosion resistance, has been independently tested to 40 GHz and can be used with military electronic products that need to meet MIL-DTL-461 5.18 RE103 requirements for controlling electromagnetic interference (EMI). SSP’s EMI fluorosilicone has also been independently tested to MIL-DTL-83528 for elastomeric shielding gaskets and to ASTM E595 for outgassing. MIL-DTL-461 Fluorosillicone and EMI Shielding

DLS Electronic Systems, Inc., an ANSI accredited laboratory under an ISO/IEC 17025 ANAB program, tested SSP-2551 at frequencies between 1 and 40 GHz. Shielding effectiveness declined at the upper end of this range, but SSP-2551 met or exceeded 100 decibels (dB) at all of the GHz frequencies that were tested.  These independent test results indicate that SSP-2551 meets the requirements of MIL-DTL-461F section 5.18 RE103, radiated emissions, antenna spurious and harmonic outputs. This U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) standard applies to electronic, electrical, and electromechanical equipment and subsystems.

Fuel, Solvent, and Galvanic Corrosion Resistance

In addition to EMI shielding, SSP-2551 provides fuel, solvent, and galvanic corrosion resistance. With its fluorosilicone base and nickel-aluminum particles, it is an ideal gasket material for marine environments, such as the decks of aircraft carriers, where there is exposure to jet fuel, de-icing fluids, salt spray, and EMI. Fluorosilicone’s fuel and solvent resistance is well-known, but nickel-aluminum’s galvanic corrosion resistance is also well-documented. During salt spray testing, nickel-aluminum can provide up to twice the galvanic corrosion resistance of silver-aluminum and performs better than silver-copper.

Proven Performance without Silver’s Price Volatility

The nickel-aluminum particles in SSP-2551 provide this EMI fluorosilicone with greater price stability than silver-filled elastomers. Silver prices have soared since last year and recently experienced an eight-year high because of frenzied trading. Despite a recent market correction, analysts believe that silver is still under-valued and that prices will rise again. SSP-2551 can help you to avoid these risks while delivering proven performance in a material that has been tested to 40 GHz and that meets MIL-DTL-461F 5.18 RE103 requirements for military electronic products.
