MIL-DTL-25988 Fluorosilicone Elastomers for Aerospace and Defense

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) supplies MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosilicone elastomers for defense and aerospace applications. These Made in the USA materials meet the requirements of MIL-DTL-25988, a detail specification from the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) that covers oil-resistant and fuel-resistant rubber. SSP provides a certificate of analysis (COA) for each batch, supplies cured sheets and rolls in a range of thicknesses, and offers custom pre-form widths and thickness for uncured materials. Minimum order quantities (MOQ) as low as five pounds or five sheets are available for molding or die cutting.

MIL-DTL-25988 Definitions and SSP Products

MIL-DTL-25988 divides compliant fluorosilicones into Types, Classes, and Grades. Type 1 elastomers are for O-rings and Type 2 materials are for molded parts (other than compression seals) and include short sheets, strips, and extruded shapes. Class 1 fluorosilicones are for intended for general-purpose use and further divided into durometer-based grades. Class 2 fluorosilicones are for high-strength, general-purpose applications and have grades that also correspond to durometer designations. The table below describes SSP’s MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosilicone elastomers.

COAs vs. COCs for MIL-DTL-25988 Fluorosilicones

Certificates of analysis (COAs) and certificates of conformance (COCs) are documents that attest to the quality of a supplier’s materials. COAs report the test results for a specific batch of materials while COCs simply indicate compliance with those requirements. When you buy MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosilicones from SSP, you’ll receive a COA with batch-level quality testing data. Other suppliers send standard COCs instead, but the document that you receive could be for a qualification test or formula that’s no longer current. When your source from SSP, however, you can see the test data about what you’re getting.

Cured and Uncured MIL-DTL-25988 Fluorosilicone Elastomers

SSP supplies sheets and rolls of cured MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosilicones at thicknesses from .015” (minimum) to .125” (maximum) and at custom thicknesses anywhere in-between. For uncured materials, SSP offers custom pre-form widths and thicknesses. If you’re a rubber molder, you can know it can be hard to get a slabbed product into a form that fits and flows in your mold. However, SSP can deliver a custom, uncured thickness so that you can cut precise pre-forms that are ready to drop right into your mold. This produces less waste and reduces rejections from no-fills or out-of-spec parts with a relatively expensive material.

Low Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs)

SSP can supply 5-lb. batches of MIL-DTL-25988 fluorosilicone elastomers so that you can conserve cash and avoid waste. Let’s say a customer needs two hundred small O-rings. That’s just a pound of material for molding. If you buy from a supplier with high MOQs, you may have to buy 50 lbs. of fluorosilicone. You could try to pass-on these costs, but you risk losing the job. If you inventory 49 lbs. of this relatively expensive elastomer, the product could expire before the customer re-orders. For die cutters who need just a few sheets, SSP can also provide what you need. Other suppliers may have MOQs of 10 yds. or more.
