Manufacturing Capacity Increases with Fifth Mill and Third Extruder

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP), a fast-growing manufacturer of silicone products and materials, has added another mixing mill and a new EMI extruder to its Ballston Spa, New York (USA) facility. This new equipment will help SSP to meet high demand for silicone, especially aerospace materials. SSP’s recent investments also underscore its commitment to short lead times and on-time deliveries. The company’s silicone products and materials are used in automotive, aerospace, defense, medical device, satellite telecommunications, and many other demanding applications.

Silicone Rubber Mixing Mill

SSP’s new mill from Rubber City Machinery Corporation is a clean, modern machine with more processing options. The addition of this 40” mill will allow SSP to boost daily production of specialized elastomers such as its military and aerospace silicones. The new mill also enables the ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer to limit certain products to a dedicated machine, a strategy that can help to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. With FDA/USP VI silicones, there are rigorous standards for cleanliness and purity.

Before acquiring this new production equipment, SSP performed all of its mixing with one large mill. As demand for SSP’s products grew, however, lead times lengthened. SSP’s new production mixing mill supports the addition of as many as two more shifts and could cut lead times in half. Today, some silicone buyers can wait as long as four to six weeks for materials to arrive. With its new mill, SSP aims to achieve lead times as short as one or two weeks.

EMI Extruder

SSP’s new 75-ton EMI extruder will increase the company’s ability to produce shielding silicones, elastomers that provide protection against  electromagnetic interference (EMI). SSP’s EMI extrusions come in a variety of fill materials, shapes, and sizes. Examples of these products include hollow Ds, hollow tubes, solid cords, solid Ds, and solid rectangles. SSP’s extra production capacity also brings expanded capabilities since the new 75-ton extruder applies more pressure. Importantly, the new extruder will help support SSP’s growing business in bonded EMI O-rings

SSP’s recent equipment investments complement a planned 25,000 sq. ft. expansion to its manufacturing facility, expanded international partnerships, and the recent addition of key personnel in research and development. Since 1989, the company that’s been known for  “Silicones That Work” has been delivering them with speed, flexibility, and service.
