SSP’s 72-durometer EMI fluorosilicone combines fuel and solvent resistance with EMI shielding.

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) now supplies a 72-durometer, nickel-aluminum fluorosilicone that’s been tested to MIL-DTL-83528 shielding effectiveness and resists fuels, solvents, and galvanic corrosion. SSP-2551 is ideal for marine environments such as the decks of aircraft carriers, where flange gaskets are subjected to salt spray, jet fuel, de-icing fluids, exhaust fumes, and electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Galvanic Protection in Marine Environments

Typically, EMI gaskets are installed between flanges that are made of different metals than the gasket’s fill material. In marine environments, fluids collect at the flange-gasket interface. This creates a galvanic cell where a loss of material occurs at the least corrosion-resistant metal. Without galvanic protection, the pitting that’s associated with bimetallic corrosion can shorten flange life and even cause flange failure.

EMI Fluorosilicone with Fuel and Solvent Resistance

SSP-2551 is filled with nickel-coated aluminum particles that provide effective EMI shielding and electrical conductivity. Compared to other EMI elastomers, nickel-aluminum products deliver the highest shielding effectiveness after long-term age testing. These particle-filled elastomers also have low transfer impedance. They resist fuels and solvents because fluorosilicone is the base material.

MIL-DTL-83528 and ASTM D991 Testing

SSP-2551 was tested according to MIL-DTL-83528 shielding effectiveness, a U.S. military specification for electrically-conductive elastomeric shielding gaskets. This SpecShield™ elastomer has a shielding effectiveness of 112 dB at 20 MHz to 10 GHz. Volume resistivity, a measure of an insulating material’s resistance to leakage current through its body, was tested according to ASTM D991 and measured 0.03 ohm / cm.
