EMI Conductive Silicones with Third-Party Test Data

EMI RFI conductive extrusions | emi conductive silicones

SSP supplies EMI conductive silicones and puts the third-party test data for these products online.

How do you decide which EMI conductive silicones to specify and purchase? If you’re like most engineers, buyers, and product managers, you need to see third-party test data in order to trust a supplier’s products. Price, minimum order quantities (MOQs), and delivery times are important, of course, but there’s no substitute for independent testing, especially if you need EMI conductive silicones that meet standards like MIL-DTL-83528 for military gaskets or UL 94 V0 EMI gaskets that provide flame resistance.

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) is committed to third-party testing so that you have the data you need to choose EMI conductive silicones you can trust. By sending samples of our materials to independent laboratories and then publishing the results, you can view certified test data and see how our products meet the requirements of specific standards. These third-party reports are available on our website, where you’ll also find technical data sheets (TDS) and safety data sheets (SDS).

EMI Conductive Silicones: Types of Third-Party Testing Reports

SSP provides the following types of independent testing reports for EMI conductive silicones.

  • Shielding Effectiveness
  • QPL Certifications
  • UL 94 V0
  • Outgassing
  • Salt Spray

Whether you need a silver aluminum filled silicone elastomer, a nickel aluminum filled silicone elastomer, or a conductive elastomer with another fill material, we share our third-party test data with you. Keep reading to learn about the reports we provide, the independent laboratories that we work with, and the SSP products that we’ve submitted for testing.

EMI Conductive Silicones: Shielding Effectiveness Reports

D.L.S. Electronic Systems of Wheeling, Illinois performs electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) shielding testing according to MIL-DTL-83528, a specification that is approved for use by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and that covers elastomeric conductive shielding materials for gaskets. SSP has submitted numerous samples of EMI conductive silicones to D.L.S. for MIL-DTL-83528 shielding effectiveness testing.

QPL Certifications

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Product Qualification Program (QPL) lists materials that meet military specifications like MIL-DTL-83528. EMI conductive silicones that are part of QPL 83528 are qualified by the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) Qualifications and Sourcing Unit (VQ), which is part of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Land and Maritime.

The DLA has QPL Listed two SSP materials. In the table below, click the product’s link for the DLA documentation.

UL 94 V0 Reports

UL 94 V0 is a flame-testing standard from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a globally-respected organization that publishes safety standards and testing protocols. UL also performs burn testing according to UL 94 V0, which applies to specimens that are positioned vertically and measures burning time, afterglow time, and the dripping of burn test specimens.

UL tested two SSP materials that are used in UL 94 V0 EMI gaskets. In the table below, click the product’s link for the UL Test Summary.

Note: Use SSP-502-40-V0 instead of GORE GS2100 and SSP-502-60-V0 instead of GORE GS5200. Both of these GORE materials have been discontinued, and SSP’s replacement materials are popular substitutes.

Outgassing Reports

Pacific Testing Laboratories (PTL) of Valencia, California performs outgas testing in accordance with ASTM E595, a standard used by NASA that evaluates the changes in the mass of a specimen under vacuum conditions. SSP submitted samples of two materials: 40-durometer SSP-502-40-V0 and 60-durometer SSP-502-60-V0. Each nickel aluminum filled silicone elastomer was tested without and without a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) so that a total of four samples were tested.

See the Outgassing Report from PTL for the third-party test data.

Salt Spray Corrosion Testing

Emctest Technologies in Italy performs salt spray corrosion testing according to ASTM B117, which defines a standard practice for operating a salt spray (fog) apparatus and measures resistance to galvanic corrosion. SSP submitted a sample of SSP-502-65, a 65-durometer nickel-graphite silicone. See the Salt Spray Corrosion Testing Report from Emctest.

Akron Rubber Development Laboratory (ARDL) also has saltwater spray fog equipment. SSP sent ARDL a sample of a passivated silver-aluminum in fluorosilcone and a sample of SSP-2529, a 68-durometer nickel-aluminum filled silicone elastomer, for an ASTM B117 exposure time of 168 hours at 95°F. See salt spray comparison data for these two samples.
