Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) is meeting rising demand for EMI shielding elastomers that meet MIL-DTL-83528 requirements. Known also as MIL-G-83528, this U.S. military detail specification defines general requirements for EMI gaskets and is organized into lettered sections. SSP makes MIL-DTL-83528 Type A, B, C, D, and K elastomers, all of which are part of the M83528 Qualified Product List (QPL) from the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA).
SSP supplies MIL-DTL-83528 materials as sheets, rolls, extrusions, and ready-to-mold compounds. These EMI shielding silicones and fluorosilicones are also available with 3M™ XYZ-Axis Electrically Conductive Tape. Sheet materials that are laminated with this electrically conductive PSA can be converted into flat gaskets with the double-sided adhesive already applied. PSA shelf life is dependent upon storage conditions, product and application.

Lower minimum order quantities (MOQs) and shorter lead times are just some of the benefits of doing business with Specialty Silicone Products, a Made in USA manufacturer that offers a certificate of analysis (COA) with every batch.
MIL-DTL-83528 Type A Materials
MIL-DTL-83528 Type A materials use silicone as the base elastomer and are filled with silver-plated copper particles. They are capable of 110 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz and have a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +125°C. SSP2569-65 meets MIL-DTL-83528 Type A requirements, and this 65-durometer material provides an offset to CHO-SEAL 1215. SSP2569-65 is tan in color and has a third-party test report for outgassing.
MIL-DTL-83528 Type B Materials
MIL-DTL-83528 Type B materials use silicone as the base elastomer and are filled with silver-plated aluminum particles. They are capable of 100 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz and have a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C. SSP2368-65 meets MIL-DTL-83528 Type B requirements, and this 65-durometer material is an offset to CHO-SEAL 1285. SSP2368-65 has third-party test reports for shielding and outgassing.
MIL-DTL-83528 Type C Materials
MIL-DTL-83528 Type C materials use fluorosilicone as the base elastomer and are filled with silver-plated copper particles. They are capable of 100 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz and have a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C. SSP2573-75 meets MIL-DTL-83528 Type C requirements, and this 75-durometer material provides an offset to CHO-SEAL 1217. Like SSP’s other M83528 QPL certified elastomers, a DLA notification of qualification is available.
MIL-DTL-83528 Type D Materials
MIL-DTL-83528 Type D materials use fluorosilicone as the base elastomer and are filled with silver-plated aluminum particles. They are capable of 90 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz and have a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C. SSP2486-70 meets MIL-DTL-83528 Type D requirements, and this 70-durometer material is an offset to both CHO-SEAL 1297 and CHO-SEAL 1298. SSP2486-70 has third-party shielding and outgassing reports.
MIL-DTL-83528 Type K Materials
MIL-DTL-83528 Type K materials are high-durometer, silver-copper silicones that are capable of 110 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz. They have a continuous use temperature range of -45°C to +125°C. SSP2571-85 is an 85-durometer material that meets MIL-DTL-83528 Type K requirements. It provides an offset to CHO-SEAL 1212. SSP2571-85 has a third-party shielding report that’s available for download.
