Three EMI Shielding Elastomers

emi shielding elastomers

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) makes a variety of EMI shielding elastomers and shares complete product information, including independent test results, on our website. SSP’s electrically conductive silicones and fluorosilicones are filled with silver-coated or nickel-graphite particles and supplied as sheets, rolls, extrusions, ready-to-mold compounds, and fabricated products.

Here are three EMI shielding elastomers that are solving tough challenges today.

SSP502-60-V0: Flame Retardant, Low Outgassing, Cost-Effective

SSP502-60-V0 is a flame-retardant, low-outgassing EMI silicone that’s filled with cost-effective nickel-coated graphite particles. This 60-durometer material has a shielding effectiveness that’s comparable to EMI silicones with more expensive silver-coated fills. As independent testing shows, SSP502-60-V0 meets UL 94 V0 flammability requirements and passes ASTM E595 outgas testing.

Applications for SSP502-60-V0 include connectors, WiFi boosters, electric motors, industrial display screens, and satellite and space applications. Use this EMI shielding elastomer instead of GORE-SHIELD® GS5200, an EMI gasket material that W.L. Gore discontinued in 2020. Test results for SSP-502-60-V0 include a third-party shielding effectiveness report.

SSP2368-65: Military EMI Shielding, MIL-DTL-83528 Type B, QPL Certified

SSP2368-65 is SSP’s most popular product for military EMI shielding. This EMI elastomer has a silicone base and is filled with silver-coated aluminum particles. SSP2368-65 meets MIL-DTL-83528, Type B requirements and is part of the M83528 Qualified Product List (QPL) from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), which is part of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

Among its advantages, SSP2368-65 has a shielding effectiveness that’s been independently tested and proven in hundreds of applications over many years. Applications for this EMI shielding elastomer include large flange-style enclosure gaskets, M83528 connectors, M83528 O-rings, and weapons system enclosures.  SSP2468-65 has also been used in bonded frame gaskets.

SSP2551: Fuel, Solvent, and Corrosion Resistance with Shielding up to 40 GHz

SSP2551 resists fuels, solvents, and galvanic corrosion. This 72-durometer EMI shielding elastomer has a fluorosilicone base and is filled with nickel-coated aluminum particles. Applications include marine enclosures, uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), and the doors, hatches, antennas, and radars on naval vessels.

Independent testing shows that SSP25551 has a shielding effectiveness at 1 to 40 GHz that exceeds the 100dB minimum in MIL-DTL-83528. Although MIL-DTL-83528 remains the most popular military specification for elastomeric shielding gaskets, its range of 20 MHz to 10 GHz is out-of-date for many of today’s challenging applications.
