Custom rubber gaskets for EMI shielding combine shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) with environmental sealing. These EMI gaskets are fabricated from specialized materials that consist of a base elastomer and an electrically conductive filler. Base elastomers include silicone, fluorosilicone, and EPDM. Fillers include silver-coated and nickel-graphite particles.
During material selection, engineers need to balance EMI shielding requirements with other performance criteria. For example, many custom rubber gaskets for electrical and electronic enclosures use an EMI silicone. If there is a contact with gasoline or jet fuel, however, an EMI fluorosilicone is recommended instead.
Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) makes EMI elastomers, but we’re not just a distributor. SSP is also a fabricator, and we offer custom rubber gaskets for EMI shielding in lower volumes and with faster lead times than the competition. How to Specify Custom Rubber Gaskets
Use this checklist to help guide your material selection.
- What is the application’s minimum and maximum temperature?
- How much compressibility and elastic recovery do you need?
- Do you need an EMI elastomer that resists fire or galvanic corrosion?
- Do you need an ASTM E59 compliant material with low silicone outgassing?
- Does the enclosure need to provide IP 65, 66, or 67 ingress protection?
Use this checklist to guide your choice of a fabrication method.
- Do you need a flat gasket, or an EMI gasket that’s fabricated from an extrusion?
- Do you need a molded gasket vs. a cut gasket?
- Do you need a sample for EMI shielding trials?
- What is the production quantity you need?
