EMP shielding protects electronics and electrical equipment from the potentially damaging effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a short burst of electromagnetic energy that can induce large currents in electrical conductors. A hardened metallic enclosure provides protection, but there are still small gaps between enclosure surfaces to fill.
EMP gaskets and EMP O-rings made of MIL-DTL-83528, Type C silicones can fill these gaps. They provide shielding against electromagnetic interference (EMI) along with high and low temperature insulation and environmental sealing. For applications that also require fuel and solvent resistance, MIL-DTL-83528, Type C fluorosilicones offer added protection.
SSP2573-75 is a MIL-DTL-83528, Type fluorosilicone that’s an offset to Parker-Chomerics CHO-SEAL® 1217. Keep reading to learn more and contact SSP for more information.
What is MIL-DTL-83528, Type C?
MIL-DTL-83528 is a U.S. military specification that establishes general requirements for electrically conductive elastomeric shielding gaskets. MIL-DTL-83528, Type C covers high-durometer, silver-copper-filled silicones (including fluorosilicones) that are capable of 110 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz with a continuous temperature range of -55°C to +125°C.
What is SSP-2573-75?
SSP2573-75 is a 75-durometer, silver-copper EMI fluorosilione that meets MIL-DTL-83528, Type C requirements and is part of the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency’s (DLA) Qualified Product List (QPL). SSP’s alternative to Parker Chomerics CHO-SEAL® 1217 is available as sheets, rolls, extrusions, and ready-to-mold compounds. SSP can also fabricate EMP gaskets and bond or mold EMP O-Rings.
EMP Gaskets and EMP O-Rings
MIL-DTL-83528, Type C silicones and fluorosilicones are the materials of choice for EMP gaskets in military applications such as avionics enclosures and generator sets (gen-sets). These elastomers are also used in the EMI O-rings for military radios, devices found in rugged environments where weather, shock, vibration, and interference can affect performance.
EMI Connector Gaskets
Typically, the applications that need the greatest EMP shielding are defense-related. However, an electromagnetic pulse can also disrupt civilian satellites, radios, cellular antennas, waveguides, 5G base stations, and radar systems. For these and other civilian applications, EMI connector gaskets and EMI waveguide gaskets made from SSP2573-75 can be used.
