EMI Connector Basics

An EMI connector is designed to reduce or eliminate the transmission of electromagnetic interference (EMI) between connected devices, or through the connector itself.

These devices are used in environments where EMI can cause problems, such as in military, aerospace, telecommunications, medical devices, and other sensitive electronic systems. Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) makes EMI gaskets for these and other applications.

EMI Shielding

An EMI connector is typically designed with metal or other conductive materials to provide shielding that blocks electromagnetic waves. This shielding helps prevent interference from both external sources and from the connector’s internal components.

Electrical Grounding

Many products have grounding features that ensure a low-impedance path to ground. This helps dissipate any electromagnetic energy that might otherwise cause interference.

Filtering Against Electronic Noise

An EMI connector may incorporate filters (such as capacitors or ferrites) that suppress high-frequency electronic noise. These filters are integrated into the device itself and provide additional protection against EMI.

Sealed Enclosures

Sealing reduces the likelihood of gaps where EMI could leak in or out. They are used in situation where maintaining signal integrity is critical, such as military communications, aerospace electronics, medical devices, industrial equipment, and high-speed data networks.

EMI Connector Types

There are many product types including coaxial, D-subminiature (D-sub), circular, and more. They can be used for data transmission, power supply, and signal transfer.

SSP Makes EMI Connector Gaskets

Specialty Silicone Products makes EMI gaskets that meet the requirements of MIL-DTL-83528, a U.S. military detail specification for elastomeric gasket materials that provide EMI shielding. Note that die-cut flange-mount products are square and come in many different sizes.
