SSP’s MIL-DTL-83528 Type D fluorosilicone is part of the DLA’s QPL-83528.

Gasket fabricators who supply defense contractors need to source products that meet military requirements. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Product Qualification Program (QPL) lists materials that meet military specifications such as MIL-DTL-83528 for electrically-conductive elastomeric shielding gaskets. Particle-filled compounds in QPL 83528 are qualified by the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) Qualifications and Sourcing Unit (VQ), part of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Land and Maritime.

As a leading provider of EMI gasket materials, Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) supplies particle-filled elastomers that meet various MIL-DTL-83528 requirements. Recently, DLA Land and Maritime added SSP-2486-70 to QPL 83528 for MIL-DTL-83528, Type D. This lettered section (D) of the elastomeric shielding gaskets specification is for fluorosilicones with 90 dB of plane wave shielding effectiveness at 10 GHz, with a continuous use temperature range of -55°C to +160°C, and that are resistant to solvents and jet fuels.

MIL-DTL-83528 Type D Flurosilicone

SSP-2486-70 is a 70-durometer (Shore A) fluorosilicone that’s filled with silver-plated aluminum particles for electrical conductivity and EMI shielding. Tested to the requirements of MIL-DTL-83528, Type D, this metal-filled elastomer provides excellent sealing properties over a thermal stability range of -60°C to +220°C. SSP-2486-70 silver-aluminum fluorosilicone also resists corrosion from metal substrates and is suitable for applications with dissimilar mating surfaces.

Specialty Silicone Products supplies SSP-2486-70 as fully-cured, conductive sheet stock; continuous extrusion profiles; or a ready-to-mold compound. Conversion methods for fluorosilicone sheets and profiles include die cutting and water jet cutting. Catalyzed raw materials are ready for press-cure molding. Uncatalyzed materials have an indefinite storage life, but may require freshening after several years.

QPL 83528 for Military Gaskets

For gasket fabricators, QPL-listed materials like SSP-2486-70 mean more than performance, quality, and reliability. QPL listed products help to maintain configuration control while assuring that the military system is logically supportable throughout its life cycle. QPL listed products also provide gasket fabricators with assurances about the manufacturer. To earn a QPL listing for a product, manufacturers like SSP must establish and maintain a program that meets rigorous requirements for the military specification.

Do you have questions about QPL listings or MIL-DTL-83528 requirements? Would you like to learn more about SSP-2486-70 for projects that require a QPL listed material that meets the MIL-DTL-83528, Type D specification? Please contact SSP on-line, or call (518) 885-8826.
